Deaf-REACH's newest housing option is the Otto Berg Apartments, which opened in 1994 with a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). A 25-unit complex located in an area of Southeast DC that is seeing much development (including a new Metro station and new single-family townhouses), these apartments are the first in the nation specially designed for independent, deaf residents. Technological adaptations include flashing light systems for phones and smoke detectors as well as special monitors to let residents see who is outside the building ringing to come in. The units are named after Otto B. Berg, an original founder of the National Health Care Foundation for the Deaf (now known as Deaf-REACH).
Funding:   The Section 8 Rental Assistance Program assists residents in paying their rent.
